iPhone 16 vs iPhone 17: Price in India Today
First, the older phone. Amazon’s own sale announcement lists the iPhone 16 with 128GB at Rs 74,999. It also offers a 10% instant discount on SBI cards.
In addition, some reports quote a lower figure. PCQuest puts the “effective” price at Rs 71,999 with offers applied. However, it does not say which offers, so check the total at checkout.
Next, the newer phone. On 10 October, Flipkart listed the iPhone 17 with 256GB at Rs 86,999 in all five colours. The listed MRP is Rs 99,900.
Flipkart also advertises an effective price of Rs 79,999. That figure includes a bank offer and an exchange bonus, as we explained in our iPhone 17 Big Billion Days guide.
As a result, the gap is Rs 12,000 on listed prices. With every offer applied on both sides, it shrinks to about Rs 8,000, by our maths.
The Sale Price That Is Not a Sale
Here is the part the banners skip. The iPhone 16 launched at Rs 79,900 in 2024. Then Apple cut it to Rs 69,900 in September 2025.
After that, things went the wrong way. In September 2026, Apple raised the same phone to Rs 89,900, FoneArena reported. Apple’s India store still showed Rs 89,900 when we checked on 10 October.
So Amazon’s Rs 74,999 is a discount only against the new, higher price. Compared with last year, you pay Rs 5,099 more for a phone that is now two years old.
Even the best reported price of Rs 71,999 sits Rs 2,099 above the 2025 price. In other words, the iPhone 16 has not got cheaper. It has only got less expensive than it was last month.
The iPhone 17 has the same problem, but a smaller one. It launched at Rs 82,900, so Flipkart’s Rs 86,999 is Rs 4,099 above launch. With a bank card and an exchange, though, it drops below launch.
We covered the reasons in our piece on why phone prices are rising in 2026.
The Numbers That Matter, Side by Side
Test results come from GSMArena’s lab reviews of both phones. Prices are listed prices, before any bank offer.

Storage and Screen: Where the Extra Money Goes
These two changes are the best reasons to pay more. First, the iPhone 17 starts at 256GB. The iPhone 16 on sale has 128GB, and that is the only size Apple’s India store still lists.
That matters more than it sounds. An iPhone has no memory card slot, so the storage you buy is the storage you keep. For example, 4K video and years of WhatsApp media fill 128GB quickly.
Second, the screen. The iPhone 17 has a 6.3-inch display that refreshes at up to 120Hz, so scrolling looks smoother. It can also drop to 1Hz to save power and show an always-on clock.
Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 stays at 60Hz. Apple also rates the newer screen at 3,000 nits outdoors, against 2,000 nits for the older one.
Battery and Charging: Closer Than Apple Suggests
Do not buy the iPhone 17 for battery life alone. Apple claims far longer video playback on the newer phone. However, independent tests show almost no gap.
In GSMArena’s battery test, the iPhone 17 came out “very close to its predecessor”. Its active use score is 14 hours 59 minutes. The iPhone 16 scored 15 hours 42 minutes.
So the older phone actually lasted 43 minutes longer. GSMArena says the faster screen costs the iPhone 17 a little during web browsing.
Charging is the one clear win. In the same review, the iPhone 17 reached 63% in 30 minutes. GSMArena’s spec pages list 50% in 20 minutes for the iPhone 17, and 50% in 30 minutes for the iPhone 16.
Cameras and Speed: Small Steps
The main camera has barely changed. According to GSMArena’s camera review, the iPhone 17 uses the same main sensor as the iPhone 16.
The ultrawide camera jumps from 12MP to 48MP. Still, GSMArena found those photos do not look “miles better” than before.
The selfie camera is the real upgrade. It moves from 12MP to 18MP, and it can frame a wider group shot without you turning the phone.
On speed, the A19 chip scores about 23% higher on AnTuTu. Both phones have 8GB of RAM, though, and the iPhone 16 is not slow. Therefore, you will feel the screen long before you feel the chip.
Finally, software. The iPhone 17 is a year newer, so it should get updates for about a year longer. Apple has not published an end date for either phone.
Who Should Buy, Who Should Wait, Who Should Skip
Here is the verdict, and we will not sit on the fence.
Buy the iPhone 17 if you plan to keep your phone for three years or more. For Rs 12,000 extra, you get double the storage, the smoother screen and an extra year of updates. At Rs 79,999 with a card and an exchange, it is an easy call.
Buy the iPhone 16 only if your budget stops at Rs 75,000 and you hold an SBI card. Aim to pay Rs 70,000 or less. Above that, you are paying more than last year for an older phone.
Wait if neither price fits. Both sales have only just opened, and our Flipkart vs Amazon sale guide explains how the card offers stack. Just know that nobody has promised lower prices later.
Skip the upgrade if you already own an iPhone 16. The battery and main camera are too close to justify it.
Skip both if you want a Pro. In that case, our iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro verdict is the one to read.

The Bottom Line
In the iPhone 16 vs iPhone 17 contest, we would buy the iPhone 17. The iPhone 16 is the cheaper phone, but it is not the better deal. That is our call.
Rs 12,000 is real money. However, it buys storage and a screen you will use for years. Meanwhile, the iPhone 16’s “discount” is mostly Apple’s own hike being taken back.
Several things are still not confirmed. Amazon has not itemised the offers behind Rs 71,999, and its SBI discount cap is not stated. In addition, we do not know how long either price will last, or how much stock is left. So check the final checkout price before you pay.
