Is the iPhone 18 Pro Really Better Than the iPhone 17 Pro? The Truth You Need to Know
iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro with a Rs 30,000 gap in India. We compare price, battery, speed and cameras, then say who should buy, wait or skip.

The iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro choice comes down to one number in India. The new phone costs Rs 30,000 more than the old one.
That is a big gap for two phones that look almost the same. So the real question is simple. What does the extra Rs 30,000 buy you?
We have not tested either phone ourselves. Therefore, this verdict rests on live Indian prices and on lab tests from reviewers who have. Every number below links to its source.
Last updated 8 October 2026. Prices were checked on Flipkart on this date.

iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro: Price in India Today
First, the new phone. On 8 October, Flipkart listed the iPhone 18 Pro at Rs 1,64,900 for 256GB. A Rs 4,000 bank offer brings that to Rs 1,60,900.
Higher storage costs much more. The 512GB model is Rs 1,89,900, and the 1TB model is Rs 2,39,900. There is also a new 2TB model at Rs 3,14,900.
Next, the old phone. Flipkart’s iPhone 17 Pro listings showed Rs 1,34,900 for 256GB on the same day. One colour carried an “Only few left” tag.
Croma is a little cheaper. It sells the 17 Pro at Rs 1,30,490, and a Rs 4,000 bank offer cuts that to Rs 1,26,490, BusinessToday reported on 5 October.
As a result, the real gap is between Rs 30,000 and Rs 34,410, by our maths. That depends on where you buy and which card you use.
The 17 Pro Is Not Actually on Sale
Here is the part the sale banners skip. The iPhone 17 Pro launched at Rs 1,34,900 a year ago. Today, Flipkart still asks Rs 1,34,900.
In other words, the old phone has barely dropped. It only looks cheap because the new one jumped by Rs 30,000. We explained why in our piece on why phone prices are rising in 2026.
You will also see far lower numbers in headlines. For example, BusinessToday worked out a best-case Flipkart price of Rs 64,170 in Big Billion Days.
However, that figure needs an iPhone 16 Pro to trade in at up to Rs 68,250. BusinessToday itself says it is not a confirmed sale price. So do not plan your budget around it.
Apple No Longer Sells the 17 Pro
There is one more catch. Apple removed the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max from its Indian online store when the new phones arrived, Gizbot reported on 10 September.
Therefore, you can only buy one from retailers like Flipkart, Amazon and Croma. Once their stock runs out, it is gone. That is why “wait for a better price” is risky here.
The Numbers That Matter, Side by Side
Test results come from GSMArena’s lab reviews of both phones. Prices are for the 256GB models.

Both phones share the same 6.3-inch 120Hz screen, 12GB of RAM and the same body size. So the real differences are battery life, speed and one small camera change.
Battery and Charging: A Real but Small Gain
This is the best reason to pay more. In GSMArena’s battery test, the iPhone 18 Pro earned an active use score of 16 hours 43 minutes.
Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Pro scored 15 hours 23 minutes in the same test. That is a gain of 1 hour 20 minutes.
The battery itself is only slightly bigger. So GSMArena credits the software or the new chip for most of the gain.
Charging is also quicker. The 18 Pro filled up in 1 hour 2 minutes, while the 17 Pro took 1 hour 18 minutes. After 30 minutes, the new phone reached 74% and the old one reached 70%.
Still, neither gain changes how you use the phone. Both last a full day, and both charge in about an hour.
Performance: A Big Jump You May Never Feel
The A20 Pro chip is a clear step up. In GSMArena’s benchmark tests, the iPhone 18 Pro scored 3,402,829 on AnTuTu. The 17 Pro scored 2,381,751, so the new phone is about 43% ahead.
Geekbench tells a similar story. The 18 Pro posted 12,641 in the multi-core test, against 9,923 for the 17 Pro. GSMArena calls the processor gains “generational”.
However, there is a small catch. In long stress tests, GSMArena found the 18 Pro took “a small step back” from last year on holding its speed.
More importantly, the 17 Pro is not slow. It runs every app and game in the App Store today. For most people, therefore, the extra speed is insurance for year five, not something you feel in year one.
Cameras: The New Trick Changes Very Little
Do not buy the iPhone 18 Pro for its cameras alone. The zoom and ultrawide cameras match last year’s on paper.
Only the main camera changes. It gains a variable aperture, which means the lens opening can widen or narrow between f/1.5 and f/4.0. The 17 Pro has a fixed f/1.8 lens.
That sounds like a big deal. In practice, though, GSMArena’s camera review found the difference “often negligible”. It says the feature brings no meaningful gain in photo quality.
Zoom photos look much the same as last year too. In addition, GSMArena did not shoot the two phones side by side, so nobody we trust has shown a clear win yet.
In short, the 17 Pro still takes the photos and video people buy a Pro iPhone for. We covered the new hardware in our iPhone 18 Pro launch guide.
Design, Screen and Software: Almost No Change
Both phones measure the same. However, the 18 Pro is 5g heavier at 211g, and GSMArena lists the weight among its cons.
Meanwhile, the screen has not changed. GSMArena measured peak brightness at 2,769 nits on the 18 Pro and 2,889 nits on the 17 Pro. That is the same panel, in effect.
The speakers are a little louder on the new phone. Beyond that, you would struggle to tell the two apart in a shop.
On software, the 18 Pro ships with iOS 27, and the 17 Pro launched on iOS 26. So the new phone should get updates for about one year longer. Apple has not published an end date for either.
Who Should Buy, Who Should Wait, Who Should Skip
Here is the verdict, and we will not sit on the fence.
Buy the iPhone 17 Pro if you want a Pro iPhone now and plan to keep it three or four years. At Rs 1,26,490 from Croma with a bank card, you save about Rs 34,000. You give up 80 minutes of battery and speed you will rarely notice.
Buy the iPhone 18 Pro if you keep phones for five years or more, or if you need more than 1TB of storage. The faster chip and the extra year of updates matter over that time. For everyone else, it is hard to justify.
Wait if you want a true bargain on the 17 Pro. It is still at its launch price on Flipkart. We would call it a deal at Rs 1,20,000 or less without an exchange. Just know that stock is limited, so waiting carries a real risk.
Skip both if Rs 1,26,000 is a stretch. The regular iPhone 17 costs far less in the sales, and we broke down that deal in our iPhone 17 Big Billion Days guide.
Skip the upgrade if you own a 17 Pro or 16 Pro. GSMArena’s verdict says the move is “probably not” worth it for those owners. We agree.
So is the iPhone 18 Pro really better? Yes, it is the better phone. However, it is not Rs 30,000 better, and that is what matters when you pay.

The Bottom Line
In the iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro contest, the older phone is the smarter buy for most Indians. It gets you most of the way there for about Rs 30,000 less. That is our call.
Several things are still not confirmed. Nobody has published a fixed Big Billion Days price for the 17 Pro without an exchange. In addition, we do not know how much stock retailers have left.
Finally, GSMArena tested the physical SIM model, and an eSIM-only model has a bigger battery. We could not confirm which one India gets. So check the final checkout price, and the model, before you pay.
