Is the Gemini Free Plan Still Good Now? What You Lose in the New Cut

The Gemini free plan is now limited to Flash-Lite. See what you lose, what AI Plus and AI Pro cost in India, and whether you should pay.

The Gemini free plan just got smaller. Since 9 October 2026, Google has limited people without a paid subscription to Flash-Lite, the lightest model in the Gemini app.

That matters if you use Gemini for homework, office emails, code or long documents. The stronger Flash and Pro models now sit behind a monthly fee.

So what exactly did you lose, what does it cost in India to get it back, and should you pay at all? Here is the plain answer.

The Short Version

  • What changed: From 9 October 2026, personal accounts without a Google AI plan get only the Flash-Lite model in the Gemini app.
  • What you lose: The Flash and Pro models. Flash now needs AI Plus. Pro needs AI Pro or AI Ultra.
  • India prices: AI Plus is listed at Rs 399 a month and AI Pro at Rs 1,950 a month.
  • Paid users are hit too: AI Plus subscribers lose the Pro model. Google says it will email them the date.
  • Best free fix: Verified students in India can claim a year of AI Plus at no cost.

What changed in the Gemini free plan on 9 October?

Google quietly updated its help page on Gemini Apps limits and model access. It says model availability is changing for personal accounts, starting in October 2026.

For people on the Gemini free plan, the change took effect on 9 October. The help page table is simple. Free accounts get Flash-Lite. Nothing else.

Before this, free users could pick the Flash model and got some access to Pro. So this is a real cut, not a rename.

There was no big announcement. Tech sites spotted the edit first, and Business Today reported the new limits for Indian readers on 5 October.

Which Gemini models does each plan get now?

Here is the new line-up, based on Google’s own table.

Google’s page only uses the names Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro. Reports from 9to5Google put the versions at 3.5 Flash-Lite, 3.6 Flash and 3.1 Pro. Treat those numbers as reported, not official.

Two more things changed at the same time.

First, every model now has an effort level: low, medium or high. Higher effort gives fuller answers. However, Google says it also uses more of your limit.

Second, AI Pro subscribers gain Deep Think, which was earlier kept for Ultra. So the middle plan actually got better while the bottom two got worse.

What do you actually lose on the Gemini free plan?

You lose the smarter models, and you will feel it on harder work.

Flash-Lite is built to be fast and cheap to run. That means it is fine for quick, simple jobs. For example:

  • Rewriting a message or an email
  • Summarising a short article
  • Translating a few lines
  • Answering a basic factual question

It is weaker where the bigger models earned their keep. Think long documents, multi-step maths, tricky code, or careful research where one wrong step ruins the answer.

The usage limits have not gone away either. Since May 2026, Gemini limits are based on computing used, not a fixed message count. They refresh every five hours until you hit a weekly cap. Long chats and heavy features, such as image or video generation and Deep Research, use up the allowance faster.

The Gemini free plan sits on the standard limit. AI Plus gets 2x that, and AI Pro gets 4x.

This is a familiar pattern. We have covered before how free AI tools are not really free, and this cut is a textbook case.

What does it cost in India to get Flash and Pro back?

Google has two plans most people will consider.

  • Google AI Plus, Rs 399 a month. This brings back the Flash model, doubles your limits and adds 200GB of storage. Google launched AI Plus in India in December 2025 at this price. You can share it with up to five family members.
  • Google AI Pro, Rs 1,950 a month. This is now the cheapest way to get the Pro model. It also includes Deep Think, 4x limits and 2TB of storage.

Over a year, that works out to Rs 4,788 for AI Plus and Rs 23,400 for AI Pro. Prices and offers can change, so check the amount shown in your own account before you pay.

There is one catch for existing AI Plus users. The plan was sold with access to Pro, and that is being removed. If that was your reason for paying, watch for Google’s email with your date.

Storage is the other half of this decision. If your Google account is nearly full, the 200GB alone may justify Rs 399. Microsoft users face a similar question after the OneDrive storage cut.

How to check which model you are using

It takes less than a minute.

  1. Open the Gemini app, or go to gemini.google.com in a browser.
  2. Sign in with your personal Google account.
  3. Tap the model picker near the prompt box.
  4. See which models are listed. On the Gemini free plan you should now see only Flash-Lite.
  5. Look for the effort setting as it rolls out, and keep it on low or medium for simple tasks to save your allowance.

Work and school accounts are separate. Google’s notice covers personal accounts only, so your office Workspace login may behave differently.

Can students still get more for free?

Yes, and this is the best deal on the list.

According to an ETV Bharat report on the student offer from August 2026, enrolled college students in India can claim Google AI Plus free for 12 months. The same report listed a student price of Rs 489 a month for AI Pro.

You need to verify your student status and link a card. The report says a Rs 2 authorisation charge may appear and is refunded. It did not give an end date, so claim it soon if you qualify.

Should you pay, or stay on the Gemini free plan?

Here is our honest verdict.

Stay free if you mostly ask quick questions, rewrite text or translate. Flash-Lite handles that well, and paying would be a waste.

Take AI Plus if you use Gemini every day for study or work and keep hitting limits. Rs 399 is fair, more so if you also need the storage or can split it with family.

Take AI Pro only if you really need the Pro model or Deep Think for coding, research or analysis. At Rs 1,950 a month, it is a work tool, not a casual upgrade.

Students should claim the free year first and decide later.

One more tip. Do not pay in a hurry. Use the free version for a week on your real tasks. If the answers are good enough, you have your answer. Also remember that Gemini is not the only assistant around. Our guide to AI tools in 2026 covers the main rivals.

The bottom line

The Gemini free plan still works, but it is now clearly the basic tier. Google has moved Flash to Rs 399 a month and Pro to Rs 1,950 a month, and even AI Plus buyers lose something.

For light use, nothing forces you to pay. For daily heavy use, the free tier will feel thinner than it did last week.
