OneDrive Storage Cut Warning: How to Protect Your Family Photos

The OneDrive storage cut shrinks Microsoft 365 Family from 6 TB to a shared 2 TB. See the dates, India prices and 6 steps to protect your files.

The OneDrive storage cut is official. Microsoft 365 Family and Premium plans are moving from 1 TB per person to one 2 TB pool shared by the whole household.

For a family of six, that means 6 TB becomes 2 TB. The price stays the same. So if your parents, partner and kids all back up phone photos to one plan, this affects you.

Here is what changed, when it reaches existing subscribers in India, what happens if you go over the limit, and the exact steps to take before your renewal.

The Short Version

  • What changed: Family and Premium plans now get a single 2 TB pool for up to six people, instead of 1 TB each.
  • Who is hit hardest: Households where three or more people use the plan. Solo users on a Family plan actually gain space.
  • When: New and upgraded subscriptions switched on October 8, 2026. Existing plans switch at the first renewal on or after May 2, 2027.
  • Your files: Nothing is deleted on day one. Microsoft says you keep access for up to one year if you are over the limit.
  • India price: Microsoft’s India store lists Family at Rs 8,199 a year and Premium at Rs 19,999 a year, both with 2 TB.

What exactly is the OneDrive storage cut?

Until now, a Microsoft 365 Family plan gave every member a separate 1 TB of OneDrive space. With six members, the household had 6 TB in total. However, nobody could lend unused space to anyone else.

Microsoft has now replaced that with shared storage. According to Microsoft’s support page on the change, the storage “comes from a single shared pool rather than separate per-person allocations.”

The pool sizes are:

Plan
Old storage
New storage
India price (per year)
Microsoft 365 Personal
1 TB, one person
1 TB, one person (no change)
Rs 6,899
Microsoft 365 Family
1 TB each, up to 6 people
2 TB shared
Rs 8,199
Microsoft 365 Premium
1 TB each, up to 6 people
2 TB shared
Rs 19,999
Microsoft 365 Pro
New plan
5 TB shared
Not listed in India yet

The India prices above come from Microsoft’s own India comparison page, checked today. Basic and Personal plans are not affected.

So the size of the OneDrive storage cut depends on your household. One person on a Family plan goes from 1 TB to 2 TB. Two people see no change in the total. Three or more people lose space, and a full house of six loses two-thirds of it.

When does the OneDrive storage cut reach you?

This is the part most people get wrong, because there are two different dates.

  1. October 8, 2026: Every new or upgraded Family and Premium subscription already uses the 2 TB shared pool.
  2. May 2, 2027 onwards: Existing subscribers move to shared storage at their first renewal on or after this date. Microsoft says, “Nothing changes before then, and you’ll receive an email before your renewal.”

That means the OneDrive storage cut reaches you on your renewal date, not on May 2 itself. For example, if your annual plan renews in April 2027, you stay on the old 6 TB model until April 2028. If it renews in June 2027, you switch in June 2027.

There is one trap. Upgrading your plan before then, for example from Family to Premium to try the extra Copilot features, moves you to shared storage immediately. Downgrading does not trigger the switch.

Will Microsoft delete your photos?

Not straight away. The OneDrive storage cut lowers your limit, but it does not wipe anything on day one. Microsoft states plainly: “You don’t immediately lose access to your files.”

Here is what the company has confirmed:

  • You get notifications as the household approaches the 2 TB limit.
  • If you exceed it, you can keep accessing your files for up to one year while you sort things out.
  • Heavy users will get “advance notice and transition support.”

However, Microsoft has not said what happens after that year. Its general OneDrive help pages say an over-quota account cannot upload or sync new files. So do not treat the one-year window as extra storage. Treat it as a countdown.

One more worry is privacy. Sharing a pool does not mean sharing files. Microsoft says each member can see only their own files unless they choose to share them.

Why the shared pool can cause fights at home

The new model has no per-person cap that we could find. Microsoft says storage “automatically goes where it’s needed.”

That sounds flexible. In practice, it means one person with a 4K video habit can fill the pool for everyone. Microsoft’s page does not mention any tool for the plan owner to set limits for each member.

As PCWorld points out, households sharing with three or more people see a large reduction, while accounts shared with one other person see little change. So talk to your family before the switch, not after the first “storage full” alert.

How to prepare for the OneDrive storage cut: 6 steps

You have months, so do this calmly. The steps below follow Microsoft’s guidance and advice from the long-running newsletter Office Watch.

  1. Find your renewal date. Sign in at account.microsoft.com and open your Microsoft 365 subscription. Write the date down.
  2. Add up everyone’s usage. Ask each member to open their OneDrive storage page and note the number. If the total is under 2 TB, you are safe.
  3. Empty the Recycle Bin. Deleted files in the OneDrive Recycle Bin still count towards storage.
  4. Remove duplicates. Many phones back up the same photos to OneDrive and Google Photos. Old PC backup folders are another common waste.
  5. Move the biggest folders. If you are still over, shift large videos to an external hard drive or another cloud service.
  6. Do not upgrade to Premium casually. An upgrade triggers the shared pool at once, so check your total first.

Finally, wait for Microsoft’s email before paying for anything. Microsoft says some existing subscribers in “eligible markets” might receive bonus storage at renewal at no extra cost. It has not named those markets or the amount, so we cannot confirm whether India is included.

Should you pay for more space or switch?

If your family genuinely needs more than 2 TB after the OneDrive storage cut, you have three routes.

Buy an add-on. Extra OneDrive storage bought by any member goes into the shared pool, up to a maximum of 10 TB per subscription. Microsoft’s support page does not list add-on prices, so check your account before you decide.

Split the load. Keep documents on OneDrive and move photos elsewhere. Google One’s 2 TB plan has been reported at about Rs 650 a month in India, and Croma lists Apple’s iCloud+ 2 TB plan at Rs 749 a month. Confirm current prices in the apps, because both change.

Go local. A one-time external drive costs less over three years than any 2 TB subscription. However, it gives you no automatic phone backup, so pair it with a small cloud plan.

Remember that cloud space was never truly free or unlimited. We explained the hidden trade-offs in Free AI Tools Are Not Really Free, and the cost behind it all in AI Feels Weightless. Its Data Centers Are Not.

The verdict: what you should do now

For most Indian households, the OneDrive storage cut is annoying, not disastrous. Many families use far less than 2 TB in total, and Rs 8,199 a year for Office apps plus 2 TB is still fair value.

It is a real loss for large families who filled their individual 1 TB accounts with photos and videos. If that is you, the clock starts at your 2027 renewal.

So do three things this week. Check your renewal date, add up your family’s usage, and clean out the junk. If the total is under 2 TB, relax. If not, you now have time to choose between an add-on, a second service, or a hard drive, without panic.

Conclusion

Microsoft has kept the price and lowered the ceiling. The OneDrive storage cut is a quiet downgrade for big households and a small upgrade for people who use a Family plan alone. Either way, your files are safe for now, and a little housekeeping will protect them for good.
