OnePlus 16 vs OnePlus 15: The Surprising Truth Before You Buy in India Right Now
OnePlus 16 vs OnePlus 15: the new phone launched in China at about Rs 86,000, the same as a OnePlus 15 costs in India. Should you buy or wait?

The OnePlus 16 vs OnePlus 15 question just got real. That is because OnePlus launched the OnePlus 16 in China on 12 October, with a 9,000mAh battery and a 200MP camera.
Here is the surprise. First of all, its China starting price converts to about Rs 86,000. In other words, that is almost exactly what India pays for a OnePlus 15 today.
So should you buy the OnePlus 15 now, or wait for its successor? The catch is that OnePlus has not confirmed an India launch. Below, we cover what is official, what is only a tip, and what we would do.
The Short Version
- Launched: 12 October 2026, in China only.
- China price: CNY 5,999 for 12GB + 256GB, about Rs 86,000 converted.
- OnePlus 15 in India: Rs 85,999 for the same memory, Rs 13,000 above its launch price.
- Biggest upgrades: a 9,000mAh battery, a 200MP main camera and a newer chip.
- India launch: not confirmed. A tipster points to December or early 2027.
- Our advice: do not buy the OnePlus 15 at Rs 85,999 now.
What OnePlus Launched
The OnePlus 16 is official, GSMArena reports. Specifically, it runs on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chip and ships with ColorOS 17.
Prices start at CNY 5,999 for 12GB RAM and 256GB storage. At the other end, the top model, with 16GB and 1TB, costs CNY 8,499.
Gizbot lists all four prices with rupee conversions. The base model works out to about Rs 85,850, and the 1TB model to about Rs 1,21,650.
However, those are only currency conversions. In fact, they are not Indian prices, because OnePlus has not set any.
Reports also differ on the sale date in China. For example, Gizbot says sales start on 13 October, while GSMArena says open sales begin on 31 October.
OnePlus 16 vs OnePlus 15: The Specs That Matter
Here is the OnePlus 16 vs OnePlus 15 spec sheet. The OnePlus 16 figures are China specs, and an Indian model, if one comes, could differ.

Selfie camera | 50MP | 32MP |
Sold in India | No | Yes |
OnePlus 15 details come from OnePlus India’s own page. Meanwhile, the OnePlus 16 details come from GSMArena and Gizbot.
Above all, the battery is the headline. At 9,000mAh, it is about 23% bigger than the OnePlus 15’s 7,300mAh, by our maths.
Gizbot also lists IP66, IP68, IP69 and IP69K ratings, and a weight of 217g to 220g. In addition, the phone gets an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor under the screen.
Notice one step back, though. Wired charging drops from 120W to 100W. With a much bigger battery, a full charge will likely take longer. Still, nobody has tested that yet.
Why the OnePlus 15 Looks Bad Next to the OnePlus 16
This is the part of the OnePlus 16 vs OnePlus 15 story that most launch reports skip. To begin with, the OnePlus 15 launched in India at Rs 72,999 for 12GB + 256GB.
Then prices rose. On 1 May, Smartprix reported a hike to Rs 77,999, blaming memory and storage costs. By October, Amazon listed the same model at Rs 85,999, as The Tech Outlook reported.
In other words, the OnePlus 15 costs Rs 13,000 more today than at launch. Meanwhile, its replacement launched in China for about the same money, with a bigger battery and a better camera.
Even the festive deal does not fix this. Indeed, the best effective price was Rs 81,999, and that needed a bank card. We broke that down in our OnePlus 15 sale price guide.
Why are prices climbing at all? For the full story, we explained the memory shortage behind it in why smartphone prices are rising in 2026.
Will the OnePlus 16 Come to India?
Nobody knows yet, and OnePlus has said nothing official. Earlier tips said India would get only the cheaper OnePlus 16R, as we covered in our OnePlus 16 India launch report.
Now a newer tip points the other way. GSMArena reports that a tipster expects two flagships in India, in December or early 2027.
According to the tip, the OnePlus 16R is the likely one. Meanwhile, the OnePlus 16 only “might” come. In fact, GSMArena itself says it does not know what will happen.
So treat any Indian launch date as a guess for now. Also, do not treat Rs 86,000 as a likely Indian price. After all, prices this year have been rising in India, not falling.
OnePlus 16 vs OnePlus 15: Should You Buy, Wait or Skip?
Here is the verdict, and we will not sit on the fence.
Do not buy the OnePlus 15 at Rs 85,999. It is Rs 13,000 above its launch price, and its successor is already out. As a result, paying more for last year’s battery and camera makes little sense.
Wait if you want a OnePlus flagship and can hold out until January. By then, OnePlus should have said which phones India gets.
Buy something else if you need a phone this month. The OnePlus 15R had an effective festive price of Rs 54,999, Beebom reported. For now, it is the safer OnePlus buy until the new phones land.
Skip importing a China OnePlus 16. It runs Chinese ColorOS software, and OnePlus has not said whether India will support it. In our view, the risk is not worth it.
Skip the upgrade if you own a OnePlus 15. Your phone has years of life left. Instead, wait to see the Indian price first.
