iPhone Duo Screen Crack Warning: 4 Things to Do Now
iPhone Duo screen crack reports are spreading days after launch. See what is confirmed, the Rs 1,49,900 India repair cost and 4 steps to take now.

iPhone Duo screen crack reports started spreading within hours of the October 23 launch. Several early owners say the inner display broke along the fold, some before they even finished setup. Apple has not commented publicly yet.
This matters in India because the phone went on sale here the same day, starting at Rs 2,99,900. Out of warranty, a new inner screen reportedly costs Rs 1,49,900. So below we cover what is confirmed, what is still unclear, and four things to do now if you own one or plan to buy.
The Short Version
- What happened: A small number of owners in the US, Australia, China and Canada report cracks on the inner screen along the hinge, often within hours.
- How common it is: Unknown. Reviewers who folded their units thousands of times saw no cracks.
- Apple’s response: No official statement. However, at least one Apple Store replaced a cracked phone on the spot.
- India cost risk: A new inner screen is reported at Rs 1,49,900 without AppleCare+, or Rs 8,900 with it.
- India returns: Apple India’s sales policy does not allow refunds or exchanges, but the one-year warranty covers defects.

What Is the iPhone Duo Screen Crack Problem?
The damage looks similar across most photos. According to TechSpot, the break runs along the fold. Then a bright line of pixels runs from it toward the right edge. Together, it forms a large white L-shape on the inner screen.
Photos have appeared on Reddit, X and the MacRumors forums. They come from the US, Australia and China. Some of the Chinese images seem to show demo units, which get handled far more than a normal phone.
The cause is not known. One owner suspects the tension springs that hold the hinge at different angles. That is a guess, not a finding, so treat it as one.
Which iPhone Duo Owners Reported Cracks?
SamMobile collected several cases from Reddit. Here are the clearest ones.
Owner (Reddit name) | Where | What they report |
|---|---|---|
Midnight_Slump | Australia | Inner screen cracked after about six hours and fewer than 20 openings |
leftyhyzer16 | Dallas, US | Hinge got tight after about four folds, then a loud pop; cracked before setup ended |
schemastic | Not stated | Damage less than seven hours after pickup; used a folio case |
Unique_Parsnip_57 | Not stated | Cracking, discolouration and a black line near the crease on a six-hour-old unit |
A Reddit user also said they watched another customer’s phone break at a Toronto Apple Store. In the Australian case, the owner felt something under the screen near the hinge, then heard a crack. There were no marks on the outside.
So each iPhone Duo screen crack report shares a pattern. Still, they are user posts, not verified lab findings.
How Widespread Is the iPhone Duo Screen Crack Issue?
Nobody outside Apple knows. TechSpot says it is “too early to say how widespread the problem is.”
There is also evidence on the other side. Android Authority notes that reviewers such as Joanna Stern and Tim Pan folded their units thousands of times. They saw wear, but no cracks. Several reviewers even called the hinge the best they have used on a foldable.
However, harsh tests do find limits. In a JerryRigEverything sand test, the hinge jammed so badly the phone would not fully close. That test is far tougher than normal use. Even so, it shows that grit and the hinge do not mix.
That means two things can be true at once. Most units may be fine, and a small batch may still have a fault. The next question is what Apple is doing about it.
What Has Apple Said?
Officially, nothing so far. As of October 25, we found no public statement from Apple on the iPhone Duo screen crack reports.
In practice, Apple has been generous. The Australian owner got a full replacement at an Apple Store straight away. Over the phone, though, TechSpot says support offered an express replacement only after placing a hold for the full phone price. It also could not give a delivery date.
Supply is another worry. TechSpot reports that demand is ahead of supply, and some orders are backed up into 2027. So a replacement may not be quick if many units fail.
What Does a Broken iPhone Duo Screen Cost in India?
This is where the risk gets real. Apple’s India repair prices for the Duo were reported in mid-October. Here are the figures quoted by Cashify.
Repair | Without AppleCare+ | With AppleCare+ |
|---|---|---|
Inner foldable screen | Rs 1,49,900 | Rs 8,900 |
Outer screen | Rs 42,900 | Rs 2,500 |
Back glass | Rs 20,900 | Rs 2,500 |
Battery | Rs 24,900 | Free |
AppleCare+ for the Duo is reported at Rs 51,900. For example, one inner-screen repair without it costs almost three times the plan price.
Note the difference, though. An iPhone Duo screen crack caused by a factory defect should fall under the free one-year warranty. These fees apply to accidental damage, or to cases where Apple decides the damage was not a defect. That decision is exactly what you want to avoid fighting over.
Also, Apple India’s sales policy says products bought from its India store “cannot be refunded or exchanged.” So there is no 14-day return window like in the US. Your protection is the warranty, plus your rights under Indian consumer law.
iPhone Duo Screen Crack Warning: 4 Things to Do Now
If you already own an iPhone Duo, or one is on the way, do these four things.
- Check the screen on day one. Open it slowly. Look along the crease for cracks, bright lines or dead pixels. If you see anything, take photos and a short video right away.
- Stop if the hinge feels wrong. In the Dallas case, the hinge got tight before it broke. If the fold feels stiff or gritty, do not force it open. SamMobile says Apple’s handling guide warns to keep sand and grit away from the hinge.
- Report it to Apple fast, and get it in writing. Visit an Apple Store or authorised service centre, or call Apple Support. Ask for a service ticket that records the damage as reported within your first days of use.
- Decide on AppleCare+ early. AppleCare+ can only be added for a limited time after purchase, so check the deadline on Apple’s India site. With the inner screen at Rs 1,49,900, the Rs 51,900 plan is worth serious thought.
Also, handle it gently for now. Wash your hands before opening it, keep it out of sandy pockets, and open it by the edges, not by pressing the inner screen.
Should You Still Buy the iPhone Duo in India?
If you have not ordered yet, our honest advice is to wait two to three weeks. That gives time for the scale of the problem to become clear. It also gives Apple time to respond, or to fix any faulty batch.
The phone itself got good reviews. We covered them in our iPhone Duo price and first reviews piece. However, at Rs 2,99,900 to Rs 4,49,900, you should not be an early tester.
If you want a big foldable now, Samsung’s option is much cheaper. Our iPhone Duo vs Galaxy Z Fold 8 comparison shows a gap of about Rs 1.2 lakh. And if you are deciding between Samsung models, see whether the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is really better than the Z Fold 7.
What to Watch Next
This story is still developing. Watch for three things:
- An official Apple statement or support document on the iPhone Duo screen crack reports.
- Reports from Indian buyers. So far, the coverage we found does not include any cases from India.
- Teardowns that explain the cause, such as the hinge springs or a faulty panel batch.
Apple’s next event on October 28 may also bring questions about the Duo. Here is our guide to the Apple October 28 event and what it means for Indian buyers. We will update this post when Apple responds.
Conclusion
The iPhone Duo screen crack reports are real, but they are few, and the cause is unknown. Reviewers’ long fold tests found no cracks. Still, with no returns in India and a Rs 1,49,900 inner-screen bill, owners should inspect early, report fast and think hard about AppleCare+. If you have not bought one yet, waiting a few weeks costs you nothing.
