iPhone 17 Pro Max Verdict: 14 Months On, the Best Buy Has One Big Warning

Our iPhone 17 Pro Max verdict, 14 months on: a 25.9-hour battery test, 100% battery health and what the iPhone 18 Pro Max really changes.

Our iPhone 17 Pro Max verdict starts with a number: it lasted 25.9 hours in Digit’s 1080p video-loop battery test. A reviewer who used it for six months then reported 100% battery health after 118 charge cycles.

That is a phone that has aged well. But Apple has since launched the iPhone 18 Pro Max, so the real question changes. Is last year’s Pro Max still worth buying, or has it become the old model?

We have not used this phone ourselves. Therefore, everything below rests on published lab tests, long-term reviews and listed specs, and we name the source each time. Where reviewers disagree, we say so.

What Has Changed Since Launch

The iPhone 17 Pro Max arrived on 9 September 2025 with a new design, a vapour-chamber cooling system and three 48MP cameras. The telephoto lens moved to 4x optical zoom, and the selfie camera grew to 18MP.

Fourteen months later, the phone itself is the same. What changed is the market around it. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is out, and several Android “Ultra” phones have passed it in raw benchmark speed.

So this verdict asks a narrower question. Which parts of the 17 Pro Max still hold up, and which parts now look old?

The Battery Is Still the Best Reason to Buy

Battery life is where this phone earns its reputation. Digit measured 36 hours of mixed use with 8.5 hours of screen time, and the phone still had 25% left. Its video loop ran for 25.9 hours.

The long-term numbers back that up. After six months, 91mobiles reported 100% battery health at 118 cycles. The reviewer also kept charging between 20% and 80% as a habit, so your result may differ.

Charging is fine rather than fast. Digit measured 62 minutes from empty to full with a 150W charger, using the phone’s 40W wired speed. Wireless charging tops out at 25W.

For comparison, the iPhone 18 Pro Max charges to 50% in about 15 minutes with a 60W adapter, according to 91mobiles. That is a real gain, though you must buy the charger separately.

Camera: Reliable in Daylight, Soft at Long Zoom

The three 48MP cameras give the phone a steady, predictable look. In good light, 91mobiles says shooting feels “almost thoughtless”, with natural skin tones and sharp detail without heavy processing.

Low light is more mixed. The same long-term review notes that the phone asks you to hold still, and that textures smooth out when processing kicks in.

The telephoto is the biggest upgrade over older Pros. Digit found shots at 8x still looked right, though detail fades past about 10x. However, 91mobiles lists weak digital zoom as a drawback, and rivals with larger sensors zoom further.

Video is the standout. Digit says the footage “simply looks fantastic”, with 4K at 120fps and professional colour options that most Android phones still lack.

Performance: Slower on Paper, Fine in Real Life

The A19 Pro chip scores lower than the newest Android flagships. In 91mobiles’ AnTuTu table, the iPhone 17 Pro Max scored 2,521,699, while the Galaxy S26 Ultra scored 3,905,605 and the vivo X300 Ultra scored 3,977,648.

That gap looks huge. In daily use, though, the reviewer said the phone “still feels absurdly fluid” after six months, with no lag or restarts.

The vapour chamber matters more than the score. Digit saw far less throttling during long gaming sessions than on the iPhone 16 Pro Max. For example, Call of Duty: Mobile held its frame rate through long multiplayer matches.

If you care about the highest possible benchmark number, an Android Ultra wins. If you care about steady speed over years, this phone is fine.

The Big Warning: Size, Weight and a Weak Siri

The size is the catch every reviewer repeats. The phone is 6.9 inches and about 231g (Digit weighed 233g). 91mobiles calls it “sort of impractical for consistent one-handed use” and says time does not fix that.

Software is the second weak spot. After six months, the 91mobiles reviewer said Apple Intelligence “still doesn’t feel particularly intelligent”. Digit’s launch review also asked for better AI. Siri and the Clean Up photo tool both drew complaints.

Not everything is a letdown. The reviewer called call screening the one genuinely useful new feature, because it filters unknown numbers automatically.

Also, Digit expects at least five years of major iOS updates. That is shorter than the seven years Google promises for the Pixel 11, which we covered in our Pixel 11 verdict.

The scores tell the story. 91mobiles rated the new phone only 0.1 points higher. Its own verdict says owners of the 17 Pro Max “can sit this one out”.

The same review adds that last year’s Pro Max “is still a smart buy” for everyone else. We agree with that, with one condition: the price gap must be real.

India Pricing and Where to Buy

This section is for readers in India. Prices below were checked on 7 November 2026.

Phone (256GB)
Listed price

iPhone 17 Pro Max
Rs 1,44,900
Smartprix, Amazon
iPhone 17 Pro Max
Rs 1,36,990
Croma, via 91mobiles
iPhone 18 Pro Max
Rs 1,79,900
Smartprix, 91mobiles

The gap between the two phones is Rs 35,000 at the Amazon price. At the Croma price, it grows to Rs 42,910, or about 24% less than the new model.

Bank offers can push the price lower. On 31 August, 91mobiles reported Flipkart offers worth up to Rs 14,000 in total for SBI, ICICI and Axis Bank cards. We did not re-check those offers today, so confirm them at checkout.

Stock is also a question. 91mobiles says the 17 Pro Max can still be found at authorised resellers, which suggests Apple is no longer the main seller. Check the seller’s warranty before paying.

Who Should Buy, Wait or Skip

Buy it if you own an iPhone 15 Pro Max or older and want a big, durable phone with excellent battery life and video. The upgrade is large, and you save a lot against the newer model. If you can find it near the lower prices above, it is the better deal.

Wait if you own a 16 Pro, 17 Pro or 17 Pro Max. 91mobiles suggests waiting for Apple’s 20th-anniversary iPhone next year. That is a report, not a confirmed date.

Skip it if you hate big phones. The iPhone 17 Pro is smaller and shares the same chip. Digit also says the standard iPhone 17 is the smarter choice for most people.

Look at Android instead if you want the fastest chip or the longest zoom. The Galaxy S26 Ultra scored well above it in benchmarks. It is listed at Rs 1,39,999 on 91mobiles, so it costs about the same as the 17 Pro Max.

If you care most about thinness, our iPhone Air one-year review covers the lighter option. Foldable fans can read about the iPhone Duo, which costs a full Rs 1.2 lakh more than the 18 Pro Max, per 91mobiles.

Quick Answers

Is the iPhone 17 Pro Max still worth buying?

Yes, for owners of an iPhone 15 Pro Max or older. The gap with the iPhone 18 Pro Max is small, and the older phone costs less.

How is the battery after a year?

One reviewer reported 100% battery health after six months and 118 cycles. We have no data beyond that, so a longer test would help.

Should I upgrade from an iPhone 17 Pro Max to the iPhone 18 Pro Max?

No, in most cases. 91mobiles says 17 Pro Max owners can sit this one out unless they get a very good trade-in value.

Is the iPhone 17 Pro Max too big?

For many people, yes. Reviewers agree it is awkward one-handed, so hold one in a shop before you buy.

The Bottom Line

The iPhone 17 Pro Max has aged well. Its battery, display, video and build quality all hold up after 14 months, and no reviewer reports slowdowns or faults.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max is better, but only a little. Unless you want faster charging or the new camera controls, the saving matters more than the upgrade.

What we cannot know is how this phone behaves in its third and fourth year. Apple has also not confirmed the next major redesign. For now, buy it if the price is right, and skip it if the size already bothers you.
