Xiaomi’s HyperOS 4 is the biggest software update of the year for Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO phones. It is built on Android 17, and it changes both how your phone looks and how it runs.
If you own one of these phones in India, the two questions that matter are simple. Will your phone get HyperOS 4, and when?

What Is HyperOS 4?
HyperOS is the software Xiaomi puts on top of Android on its phones, tablets and other devices. HyperOS 4 is the fourth version, and it is built on Android 17.
That means compatible phones get Google’s latest Android foundation along with Xiaomi’s own design, AI features and connected-device tools.
The Biggest New Features
Soft Light Glass design
The most visible change is the new look. Xiaomi calls it Soft Light Glass, a transparent design with layers of depth and lighting reflections that respond in real time.
There is a catch. According to Beebom, the full Soft Light Glass effect is limited to phones with the Snapdragon 8 Elite, Dimensity 9500 or Xiaomi’s own Xring O1 chip. Other eligible phones get a simpler version.
So if you own a mid-range Redmi or POCO, expect the new design, but not every visual effect you see in Xiaomi’s promotional videos.
A more flexible lock screen and home screen
HyperOS 4 adds dynamic lock screens and folders. You can place the clock more freely, stack notifications differently and resize folders.
Widgets can now be grouped together, which helps keep a busy home screen tidy.
AI upgrades
Xiaomi is also upgrading its AI assistant with Super XiaoAI 2.0. XiaoAI has historically been a China-focused assistant, and Xiaomi has not said which of these AI features will reach Indian phones, so treat them as uncertain for now.
Better performance on less memory
Xiaomi says HyperOS 4 has been optimised to use less memory. That is a claim worth testing once the update reaches phones, especially on budget Redmi and POCO models where RAM is tight.
HyperOS 4 Release Date
The HyperOS 4 beta began on 14 August 2026, and the stable version is expected around September 2026.
Xiaomi has not announced a date for India. In past years, Indian versions of HyperOS have usually arrived after the Chinese release and rolled out in phases, with flagship phones first. We will update this page when Xiaomi confirms the India timeline.

Phones That Will Not Get HyperOS 4
Two popular phones miss out, according to Beebom: the Redmi Note 14 5G and the POCO M7 Pro 5G. Both were promised only two major Android updates, and HyperOS 4 would be a third.
If you own one of these, your phone will keep receiving security updates for a while, but not the new design or Android 17 features.
How to Check for the HyperOS 4 Update
When the update reaches your phone, you can install it from Settings → About phone, then tap your current HyperOS version to check for updates.
Before updating:
- Back up your photos and chats
- Charge your phone above 50 percent
- Use Wi-Fi, since major updates are large downloads
Updates usually arrive in waves, so if a friend with the same phone gets it first, yours should follow within a few days or weeks.
The Bottom Line
HyperOS 4 is a significant update. The new Soft Light Glass design and Android 17 base make it the biggest change to Xiaomi’s software in a while, and the eligible list is long, covering phones as old as the Xiaomi 13T and budget models like the Redmi A5.
The main unknowns are timing for India and which AI features Indian users will actually get. Until Xiaomi confirms those, treat any specific India release date you see online as a guess.
