The ColorOS 17 update starts reaching the OnePlus 15 in China on 8 October. That is the software replacing OxygenOS on OnePlus phones everywhere.

However, India has no date at all. So far, OnePlus owners here have only a small closed beta, and it filled up back in August.

So here is what is confirmed, which phones are expected to get it, and what you should do while you wait.

The Short Version

  • China rollout: the stable ColorOS 17 update begins on 8 October with the OnePlus 15 and OnePlus 15T.
  • India rollout: no date. OPPO and OnePlus have not published an India or global schedule.
  • India beta: a closed test for the OnePlus 15 and 15R, with 300 slots per phone. Applications closed on 7 August.
  • OxygenOS: officially retired from Android 17 onwards. OnePlus confirmed this in July.
  • Your choice: OnePlus says the move is voluntary for eligible phones.
  • Not confirmed: the India date, the official device list, and how long you can stay on OxygenOS.

What Happens on 8 October

OPPO made ColorOS 17 official in China on 17 September. Along with it came a full rollout calendar.

Gizmochina reports that the OnePlus 15 and 15T get the update on 8 October. Then, the OnePlus 13 series follows on 16 October.

After that, the pace slows. The OnePlus 12 is listed for 26 November, and the OnePlus 11 for 26 December.

There is one big catch, though. Every date on that calendar is for China. The same report says OPPO “hasn’t announced a global or India-specific rollout timeline”.

In addition, GizChina’s timeline confirms the software is based on Android 17. It also repeats that no India schedule exists yet.

Why Your OnePlus Is Getting ColorOS at All

This did not come out of nowhere. On 16 July, OnePlus confirmed that OxygenOS is ending.

Digit reported that OnePlus phones will move to ColorOS from Android 17 onwards. According to the company, the change will speed up updates and improve software quality.

The news came from Ford, who leads OnePlus in India. Beebom quotes him saying eligible phones “will have the option to voluntarily update to ColorOS 17”.

He also promised the same warranty, updates and after-sales service as before. Moreover, OnePlus now shares more than 600 service centres across India with OPPO.

Still, the timing worried many fans. The same week, reports claimed OnePlus was winding down in India. OnePlus denied that, and we covered the fallout in OnePlus 16 May Skip India.

Where India Stands on the ColorOS 17 Update

India is not at zero. In August, OnePlus opened a closed beta for the OnePlus 15 and 15R here.

It was tiny, however. The Tech Outlook reports there were 300 slots for each phone. Applications ran for just two days, on 6 and 7 August.

Also, the build came with a warning. It was meant for testing and could contain bugs or stability problems.

Since then, nothing public has changed. There is no open beta in India, and no stable date either.

That stings a little. The OnePlus 15 costs the same flagship money here as anywhere. Yet buyers in China get the new software first, while Indian owners simply wait.

To be fair, that is normal for this group. OPPO usually finishes China first and moves abroad later. Even so, a rough window for India would cost OnePlus nothing.

Which OnePlus Phones Should Get It

Here, be careful. OnePlus has not published an official India device list.

However, Beebom’s expected list follows the Android 17 update promise for each phone. It is the best guide we have for now.

| Series | Phones expected to get ColorOS 17 |

|—|—|

| Flagship | OnePlus 15, 15R, 13, 13R, 13s, 13T, 12, 12R, 11, Open |

| Nord | Nord 6, Nord CE 6, Nord CE 6 Lite, Nord 5, Nord CE 5, Nord 4 |

| N series | OnePlus N6, N6x |

| Tablets | Pad 4, Pad 3, Pad 2, Pad Lite, Pad Go 2 |

On the other hand, some popular phones miss out. Beebom lists the OnePlus 11R, Nord 3, Nord CE 4 and Nord CE 4 Lite as not eligible.

Those phones have simply reached the end of their Android upgrades. As a result, they stay on OxygenOS and keep getting maintenance updates.

What Actually Changes on Your Phone

Less than you might fear. TelecomTalk notes that ColorOS and OxygenOS already share the same code base. Mostly, the difference is the look.

So your apps, photos and settings should carry over as usual. Nobody has reported that the stable update wipes data.

As for what is new, OPPO made some bold claims in China. For example, Gizmochina says apps use about 25% less memory at start-up and while running.

Background apps also stay open more reliably, by 55.6% according to OPPO. Besides that, there are new AI tools for photos, notes and live translation.

Treat those numbers with care, though. They are OPPO’s own figures for the China build. Indian builds often drop some features and add Google apps instead.

Should You Update or Stay on OxygenOS?

For now, you cannot choose yet. But when the update lands, here is our advice.

Update early if you own a OnePlus 15 or 15R and like new features. Those phones were tested first, so they should get the most polished build.

Wait a few weeks if your phone is your work phone. First builds of a brand-new skin always have rough edges. Therefore, let others find the bugs.

Stay calm if you love OxygenOS. The move is voluntary, and nothing forces you to switch on day one.

There is a limit to staying put, however. Beebom says OnePlus is “expected” to offer only a limited rollback window. So do not count on switching back months later.

Meanwhile, rivals are moving faster. Samsung owners can already check the One UI 9 India release, and Xiaomi users have HyperOS 4.

Quick Answers

When will the ColorOS 17 update come to OnePlus phones in India?

Nobody knows yet. China starts on 8 October, but OnePlus has given no India date.

Is OxygenOS really ending?

Yes. OnePlus confirmed in July that OxygenOS retires from Android 17 onwards. Older phones stay on OxygenOS.

Do I have to install ColorOS 17?

No. OnePlus says the update is voluntary for eligible phones. How long that choice lasts is not confirmed.

Will my OnePlus 13 get it?

It is on the expected list. In China, the OnePlus 13 is due on 16 October. India has no date.

The Bottom Line

The ColorOS 17 update is real, it is close, and it is coming to OnePlus phones. Just not to India yet.

In China, the OnePlus 15 gets it on 8 October. Here, at most 600 beta testers have it, and everyone else has silence. That is poor communication from a brand that calls India a top market.

Still, there is no reason to panic. Your phone keeps working, your warranty stays the same, and the switch is your choice.

Plenty is unknown, though. We do not know the India date, the official device list, or the rollback rules. We also do not know which China features will reach Indian phones.

Until OnePlus answers those, do nothing. Keep OxygenOS, keep your backups current, and wait for a real date.
