Google’s September update is rolling out now, and this Pixel Drop in India brings one feature that really matters here: scam warnings on your notifications. It arrives with Android 17 QPR1 on every Pixel from the Pixel 6 onwards.
That is good news in a country where scam messages arrive daily. However, there is a gap. The feature does not list Hindi or any other Indian language, and its most useful new trick is still limited to the US.

Scam Alerts Finally Reach India
Until now, Scam Detection on your notifications was a US-only feature. With this drop, it is expanding to nine new countries, and India is one of them.
The idea is simple. When a message notification looks like a scam, your Pixel flags it before you even open the chat. According to Gizbot, all of this runs on the phone itself, so your message content is not sent to Google.
This matters in India more than almost anywhere. Fake delivery messages, KYC alerts and “your electricity will be cut” texts are part of daily life here. A built-in warning is a real safety net, especially for parents and older relatives.
The Catch: No Hindi, and No Keyboard Warnings
Here is the part that frustrates me. The expansion adds six new languages: Arabic, French, German, Portuguese, Japanese and Spanish. Hindi is not on that list, and neither is any other Indian language.
So, based on what Google has listed, the feature should work on English messages in India. But many scam texts here arrive in Hindi or Hinglish. Google has not said how well it handles those.
That gap looks odd, because Google already does this for calls. Last year, Google brought call Scam Detection to India on the Pixel 9 and later, and it understands callers speaking Hindi.
There is a second catch. The same drop adds scam warnings inside Gboard, which show a “likely scam” chip above your keyboard when you start replying. Android Authority and 9to5Google both list that feature for the US only.
The Other New Features
Scam alerts are the headline for India, but a few other changes are worth knowing about.
VIPs widget: The redesigned widget lets you call or text favourite contacts with one tap. It also shows badges for missed calls and unread messages. Android Authority says it works on Pixel 6 and newer in all regions.
Pause Point: This Digital Wellbeing feature adds a short pause before you open an app you have marked as distracting. It does not block the app. Instead, it asks whether you really meant to open it.
Harry Potter themes: Google added themed wallpapers, icons and sounds made with Audible, along with a free Audible trial. Android Authority lists India among the supported countries.

Which Pixel Phones Get It
Every Pixel phone from the Pixel 6 onwards is eligible for Android 17 QPR1. That includes the 6a, 7a, 8a, 9a and 10a, all the Pro and Fold models, and the new Pixel 11 series. For the Pixel 11, reviewed in our Pixel 11 review, this is its first Pixel Drop.
Phones older than the Pixel 6 are not included. Reports disagree on the Pixel Tablet, so check your own device if you have one.

How to Install the Update
Google is rolling this out in phases, so it may not reach your phone on day one. To check manually, follow these steps:
1. Open Settings.
2. Tap System.
3. Tap Software updates, then System update.
4. Download and install if the update shows up.
After that, look for Scam Detection in your phone’s settings. Features like this sometimes reach phones a few days after the update itself.
Should You Care?
Yes, if you use a Pixel 7 or newer, or you set up phones for family members. The scam alerts alone are worth installing this for.
Mildly, if you mostly get messages in Hindi. The protection is there, but Google has not promised Hindi support.
