Galaxy AI vs Gemini in 2026: What You Need to Know Now
Galaxy AI now runs on Gemini, so which should you use? We compare Galaxy AI vs Gemini features, free and paid plans, and India prices in 2026.

Updated September 2026. This comparison has been rewritten for One UI 9 and Gemini 3.
A year ago, Galaxy AI vs Gemini was a straight fight. Samsung had its own AI features, Google had its assistant, and you picked a side.
In 2026 that line has blurred. With One UI 9, Samsung has put Google’s Gemini at the heart of Galaxy AI, so on a new Galaxy phone you are often using both at once.
Here’s what each one actually does now, what is free, what costs money in India, and which you should rely on.
The Short Version
- Galaxy AI is Samsung’s set of AI features on Galaxy phones, and its basic features are free
- Gemini is Google’s AI assistant, available on almost any Android phone and on iPhone
- The big change: One UI 9 builds Gemini into Galaxy AI, so they now work together on Samsung phones
- Gemini’s free tier runs Gemini 3 Flash by default, and paid Google AI plans in India start at Rs 199 a month for the first six months
- Our verdict: if you own a recent Galaxy flagship, use both. On any other phone, Gemini is the one that matters
The Big Change: Galaxy AI Now Runs on Gemini
Samsung began the official rollout of One UI 9 on 16 September 2026, starting with the Galaxy S26, S26+ and S26 Ultra. It is based on Android 17.
The biggest shift is under the hood. Earlier versions of Galaxy AI handled single tasks, like rewriting a message or translating a call. The Gemini-powered Galaxy AI in One UI 9 can carry out several actions from one request.
That changes the question. On a new Galaxy phone, it is no longer Galaxy AI or Gemini. It is how the two work together.
What Galaxy AI Does in 2026
Now Nudge
The standout new feature is Now Nudge. It offers suggestions based on what is on your screen. When you are making plans over text, for example, it can pull up reservation details or save a shared location without you leaving the conversation.
Now Brief and photo tools
Now Brief, Samsung’s personalised daily summary, has been redesigned with interactive cards. Photo Assist lets you edit photos by typing what you want changed.
Is Galaxy AI free?
Samsung says its basic Galaxy AI features are free, but has left the door open to charging for enhanced features in future. No pricing has been announced.
Which phones get the best features
Not every Galaxy phone gets everything. According to SamMobile, the most advanced tools need a recent flagship processor, at least 12GB of RAM and support for Gemini Nano v3. Older and mid-range Galaxy phones get a smaller set.
What Gemini Does in 2026
Gemini 3 is now the default
According to Google’s Gemini release notes, Gemini 3 Flash is now the default model in the Gemini app. Gemini 3 Pro, Google’s most capable everyday model, is available to all users, with higher usage limits on paid plans. The most advanced reasoning mode, Gemini 3 Deep Think, is limited to the top Ultra plan.
It works almost everywhere
This is Gemini’s biggest advantage over Galaxy AI. It runs on nearly any Android phone and on iPhone, and Google has now added a Windows app too. Galaxy AI only works on Samsung devices.
What It Costs in India
Galaxy AI’s basic features come free with a supported Samsung phone. Gemini has a free tier and three paid plans:
- Gemini free: Gemini 3 Flash by default, with limited access to Gemini 3 Pro
- Google AI Plus: Rs 199 a month for the first six months, then Rs 399
- Google AI Pro: Rs 19,500 a year
- Google AI Ultra: Rs 24,500 a month, aimed at professionals
There are two ways to get paid Gemini for free. Jio users aged 18 to 25 on an unlimited 5G plan can get 18 months of Google AI Pro free, and eligible college students can get a year of Google AI Plus free.
Galaxy AI vs Gemini: Side by Side
- Works on: Galaxy AI on Samsung phones only; Gemini on almost any phone
- Price: Galaxy AI basic features free; Gemini free, with paid plans from Rs 199 a month
- Best at: Galaxy AI for on-phone tasks like photos, calls and screen suggestions; Gemini for questions, research, writing and anything across apps
- On a new Galaxy phone: you get both, and they now work together
Which Should You Use?
If you own a recent Galaxy flagship
Use both. Galaxy AI handles the things that live inside your phone, like photo edits, call translation and Now Nudge, while Gemini handles questions, research and writing. With One UI 9, you rarely have to choose.
If you use a Pixel or any other Android phone
Gemini is your AI. Galaxy AI is simply not available to you, and Gemini’s free tier is strong enough for most people. On a Pixel, Gemini is even more deeply built in, as we saw in our Pixel 11 review.
If you need AI for serious work
Look at Google AI Pro. Deep research and higher limits on Gemini 3 Pro are where the paid plan earns its price, and if you are a Jio user or a student, check the free offers first.
The Bottom Line
Galaxy AI vs Gemini is no longer a contest in the way it was in 2025. Samsung has effectively chosen Gemini as the brain behind Galaxy AI, while keeping its own Samsung-only features on top.
For Galaxy owners, that is the best of both. For everyone else, Gemini is the AI to learn. Samsung has not said which future Galaxy AI features might become paid, so treat “free” as true for now rather than forever.
