The Browser Company is all set to allure window users away from Chrome and Edge with Arc Browser. And amidst that it paves way for Apple’s Swift apps on Microsoft’s OS too…
Marking an exciting milestone for web browsing, The Browser Company launched its much-anticipated Arc browser for Windows. After a successful testing phase, with over 150,000 early adopters, the browser is now available to everyone, eliminating the previous waitlist of over 1 million eager users. By leveraging Swift, originally an Apple language, the company ensures seamless integration between its Mac and Windows versions, promising consistent updates and features across platforms. Arc sets itself apart with a sleek design, featuring a collapsible sidebar that combines tabs and bookmarks for effortless navigation. With its unique features and user-focused design, Arc aims to challenge the dominance of browsers like Chrome and Edge, offering users a refreshing alternative to explore the web. Or perhaps as they market themselves, “A better way to search and browse“
So what has it brought
Thie version is ideally based on Arc Search and Arc Browser, to simplify your search experience and become something more than “just a browser”. The Windows version of Arc brings some features from its Mac counterpart, such as the handy sidebar for quick access to favorite web pages and the versatile Spaces feature for organizing tabs into different tasks like work or entertainment. Plus, users can enjoy the convenience of profiles for personalized browsing. It also offers split view for multitasking with multiple tabs in a single window.
Some new additions include the Peek feature, offering quick link previews without the need to click, and Arc Sync, enabling seamless access to sidebar, spaces, folders, and tabs across devices. For Windows users with touchscreens, Arc delivers an intuitive experience tailored to their needs. However, some features like Little Arc and AI-powered functionalities are yet to make their debut on the Windows platform, leaving room for future updates and enhancements. And yes the “Browse for me” feature might be on its way.
Beyond Just a Browser
Arc’s approach to web browsing, with its sidebar instead of traditional tabs, offers a refreshing way to navigate the online world, allowing users to focus on one website at a time without distractions. Built on Chromium, Arc ensures seamless compatibility with websites and extensions, making the transition smooth for users. Beyond just a browser, Arc represents a broader vision of becoming the “operating system for the internet,” providing a platform that extends beyond browsing. The adoption of Swift for building Arc on Windows is a significant milestone. This showcases the potential for other developers to embrace memory-safe programming languages.
A subtle catch
Arc faces a daunting challenge as it steps into the ring against Chrome. Touted as “the Chrome replacement you’ve been waiting for.”, by The Verge. With Microsoft’s Edge also vying for attention, The Browser Company must prove itself in a landscape dominated by giants.
But they are the one’s who can make the mark
Arc is all about simplifying our complex digital lives, offering tools that adapt to our needs. The best part? Arc is a work in progress. It is evolving every week promising continuous improvement. To blend seamlessly with Windows, The Browser Company has embraced Microsoft’s WinUI framework. This is ensuring Arc aligns with the Fluent design of Windows 11. Users can even personalize their experience by matching Arc’s backdrop to their desktop theme, adding a touch of customization.
On a side note
Arc search is currently available only on windows 11 but don’t worry the startup is working on windows 10 compatibility. While Chrome recently embraced native ARM64 compatibility for Windows, Arc won’t follow suit immediately for upcoming Arm-powered Windows laptops. Also Arc for Windows now syncs with Arc Search, expanding its reach across platforms. With an Android version of Arc Search in the works, the seamless cross-platform experience is on its way!
